Thunderbird is free and pretty easy to set up and use. I've used it every once in awhile and prefer it to Outlook but that might just be because I associate Outlook with work and I hate being reminded of work when I'm at home. Most people I know prefer Outlook though mainly because they are used to it. If you haven't ever used either program before give Thunderbird a try

Thunderbird is one of my favorite non web based e-mail clients. Its simple to set up for technophobes like myself and the filters really work. I usually recommend it to people for home use and if they want a change of pace from outlook.

I know people that swear by it... but I do not use it myself.
